Telefutura has returned! Now, there are hot rumors of the Spanish Boxing Series Solo Boxeo coming to Philly on May 7th with rising local prospect Danny “Swift” Garcia in the main event. No opponent has been named and the venue will most likely be The Arena though nothing is completely confirmed. Garcia is coming off his best win as a pro during a hard earned split decision win over veteran Ashley Theophane. With the proper adjustments – Swift will be a major player in the 140 lb division.

There are also indications of Anthony Flores appearing on this card. More info to come as details become available…

Big shout out goes to “Young Swift” Danny Garcia who was sternly tested on national television and came out on top despite not having his best stuff on this particular evening. The Golden Boy Promotions prospect was matched against experienced fringe contender Ashley Theophane of England and the Brit gave everything he had in effort to take Garcia’s 0.

We didn’t see a slick boxing amateur in this fight, instead Garcia showed the look of a guy who can take a good punch, won’t lose his composure and also wasn’t afraid to impose his will immediately after badly losing a round. It was a little too close for comfort as the end result was a split decision win for the young Philadelphian.

With all of this said, there is still some sharpening up to do at the gym but overall – to beat this caliber fight at this stage of Garcia’s career is an accomplishment to be proud of. A few more fights and he should be ready for the top of the class in the 140 lb division.

Danny Garcia’s team wasn’t swift enough to find a suitable opponent for his 8/14/09 co-feature bout so work coming from ESPN head quarters is that his fight has been canceled.

Garcia’s management has made a habit of waiting until the last minute for an opponent. This time it cost a valuable TV date just as ESPN FNF gets ready to wrap up it’s season . With that said, Young Swift has a powerhouse team behind him so you will end up seeing him somewhere soon.

Danny Garcia blows through Miranda in 2 rounds on ESPN!

Some saw it as a step up but in the ring it was still a complete mismatch as Philly’s “Young Swift” Danny Garcia barely broke a sweat in San Jose this Friday when he blew out Mexico’s Pavel Miranda in 2 rounds in the opening bout of this weeks edition of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights. Miranda tried in the beginning but once he tasted the speed of the young Jr. welterweight prospect, he packed it in, especially after being floored by a perfectly times left – right combination to the face. Miranda got up but the pummeling got worse as Garcia scored another knockdown which left the referee no choice but to wave off the contest at the :52 mark of round 2. .

Nice showcase win for Garcia who improves to 13 – 0, 8ko’s. Hopefully it won’t be much longer until we see him locking them up with name opponents who can give him more of a test.

Danny Garcia to co-feature on Friday Night Fights this week! Interview is in!

This week on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, look for North Philly’s rising welterweight prospect Danny “Swift” Garcia (12-0, 7ko’s) to get his first taste of national exposure when he competes in the 8 round co-feature against Pavel Miranda (16-3, 8ko’s) of Mexico.

Garcia, a former amateur standout and Olympic alternate trains out of the Harrowgate Gym with some sparring at Billy Briscoe’s Oven mixed in. He career is guided by some of the industries heaviest hitters with the promotional end handled by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, and management handled by Shelly Finkel who has quite a few world champions on his books.

Since turning pro in late 2007, Garcia has stayed very active in the ring and during this time slowly but surely increasing the level of competition. Many truly believe that is he keeps his head on straight, we have the makings of a star who can be within title contention as early as next year. If that is true, this is a fight he must win convincingly. Find out for yourself by tuning into the deuce at 9pm this Friday night!

April 2009 Philly Top 10 Pound for Pound Lists!

It has been a while since I put together a Philly top 10 list and in that time it is still pretty obvious who is #1 in the town, that would be B-Hop. But in the past year there has been a lot of activity amongst the rank and file who made moves to get to the top. Some succeeded, some failed, some have rebounded and others are on their way.

This time around I give you two lists. First is a national Philly top 10 pound for pound which gives my ranking to those from this area who are either champions, within title contention or TV fighters. These guys are all over the world and are known industry names.

The next list is themed “21 & Under” ranking the Philly pros with 21 pro fights or less. These fights can take place anywhere in the world. This list tracks the activity of the young pros who seem to be on their way to making big moves in the boxing circuit within the next few years. These rankings are based on pro performance and potential, not solely on amateur career.

This was done as a replacement for the local top 10 list that ranked boxers competing within city limits. There was just not enough activity to compile one. Take a look and feel free to send any feedback to me via email.
