Boxing returns to Mothers house on October 2nd as Vernoca Michael & Don Elbaum present a night of boxing themed “Cancer Awareness Night” on North Broad street. The card is still being assembled but the main event seems to be in place. Cruiserweight Ran Nakash (20-0, 15ko’s) of Haifa Israel returns to his home away from home to take on ring drifter Gary Gomez (18-10-1, 7ko’s) for a scheduled 10 rounder. Nakash is on the brink of getting a meaningful fight and a solid ranking. Not sure if Gomez is the test to see if Nakash truly belongs but for whatever it is worth, Gomez has fought some very good opponents, although in losing efforts. Let’s hope that Gomez brings something to the table on this night.

The undercard should show Dangerous Darrell Jones taking on Achmed Tuba in a 4 rounder. Jones is a talented local product and his fight is anticipated by many in the area even though this will only be his second time lacing them up as a pro. Tuba is connected to some Blue Horizon insiders, and has garnered the place some local headlines with story of training overseas. This should be interested, especially if it goes to the scorecards. Not many think it will go the distance though as the early line is Jones by KO in 3.

Victor Vasquez is not on the card nor will he fight Tyric Robinson on October 16th. Expect to see the Boxing Barber sometime in late November.

Kansas native Jeremiah Graziano brings a 6-0, 6ko record to Philly for the first time. Let’s see how they match him. Check out a YouTube clip here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTtM3xEcYUY&feature=player_embedded

Monndre Pope, Joe Alonzo, Ryan Carson & Ardrick Butler are possibilities to round out the card. More info to come soon

Ran Nakash wins by KO in Newark!

Photo credit / Cindy Capitani & Mike Ricciardelli

Israeli Cruiserweight Ran Nakash upped his record to 19-0, 15ko’s with a 4th round KO over Virginia’s William Bailey in Newark over the weekend. Nakash, who usually conducts business at The Blue Horizon, becomes an interesting wildcard in the Cruiserweight division with this win. After witnessing very lackluster performances from the NABF champion Matt Godfrey and top challenger Shaun Hawk, it is not far fetched to think that Nakash compete at this level. Keep an eye out because he is due for a jump up in competition soon.

Also on this Newark card, Poland’s Tomasz Adamek retaining his IBF title with a 4th round KO over Bobby Gunn. Adamek now must face Philly’s Steve “USS” Cunningham or forfeit his title.

Patterson, NJ’s Henry Crawford (21-0, 8ko’s) won an 8 round unanimous decision over Philly’s Kaseem Wilson (12-2, 3ko’s) by scores of 80 – 72 x2 & 79- 73.

Nakash stops Brunelli in 7, Edmunds is Marvel-ous against Tyric Robinson @ The Blue!

I have to tip my cap to “The Don” Don Elbaum. It seems like every time there is a fight under his watch at Mother’s house, I am always complaining that he never has the card finalized more than 2 days before bell time or that he is always throwing some cheese ball gimmick out in the main event and giving it the hard sell. It was the same ol’ story this time around with “the Italian – Jewish Philadelphia” title on the line in the main event, with the state #1 contender in the Super Middleweight division Gee Culmer not offered an opponent that would get Greg Sirb’s stamp of approval, with other fights being patch worked with last second fill ins. With all of that in the air on April 3rd, The Don patchwork produced one entertaining card this Friday in front of a jam packed audience who came from all walks of life.

The main event more than lived up to expectations as Israel’s Ran Nakash (17 – 0, 13ko’s) got the fight of his life from Mayfair’s Dave Brunelli (8-5, 3ko’s) and still pulled out the victory in a match that ended early in the 7th due to the doctors orders because of Brunelli’s apparently cut eyelid. The fight started with more hoop la than a Super Bowl half time show. Italian announcer, Jewish announcer, Italian anthem singer, Jewish anthem singer, USA anthem singer, Italian ring girl… you catch my drift.

After the ring cleared and the men got down to business, we were treated to a damn good Philly style main event. After 2 rounds it looked like Nakash was going to send the Brunelli and his big crowd home disappointed early. By round 4 Brunelli was showing balls the size of grapefruits as he took a lot of Nakash’s best power shots and encouraged him to keep on coming, standing an exchanging at short range. Midway through round 6, the possibility of Brunelli snatching the fight with a late KO wasn’t out of the question as he backed Nakash up with a few good shots of his own and kept fighting strong. It wasn’t to be, as referee Gary Rosado ordered Brunelli to see the doctor at the start of round 7 to check on a swollen eye and bloody nose, wounds the doctor deemed too serious to continue. It was an unfortunate ending to a fight that allowed both fighters to show their wares. Nakash again showed he is a non stop buzzsaw and is not just some built up boxer, Brunelli showed up in the best shape of his life and displayed a toughness that even his biggest detractors have to appreciate. After the fight Nakash said “I was really surprised he was able to take those shots. he is a really tough fighter”. Here’s to both men for putting on a fight that lived up to the hype.

In the co-feature, Frankford’s Julius Edmonds bullied his way to a 6 round unanimous decision win over Philly’s Tyric Robinson in their highly anticipated Jr. Welterweight contest. From start to finish, Edmunds fought like he wanted to make a statement and his mission was to stay in Robinson’s chest and for every second of every round. He exerted all of his energy to push forward and punch hard throwing a variety of combinations to the head and body while smothering anything his opponent could fire back in return. Robinson did not back down and punched back every step of the way but it was Edmunds who was clearly in control the entire time. The fight went to the score cards which read 60 – 54 x 2 & 58 – 56 for Edmunds. It is another strong showing for Edmunds who many feel can match up with any 140 lb fighter competing in this area. When asked about this fight he said “this was a very good win for me, Tyric Robinson is a known fighter in this area.” When asked about who he wanted next he replied “I’m not sure but I’m thinking maybe a fight with Victor Vasquez.” Now THAT would be one hell of a fight….

On the undercard…

Reading’s Julio Caesar Matthew’s won a hard fought unanimous decision over NJ’s William Gill. It was a steady pace through most of the fight where each men landed some good, single shots. Matthews did some good work in rounds 4 and 5 as the south paw was able to land clean left hands. Gill came on strong in the final minute, landing consecutive rights that quickly swelled up Matthews eye. It eventually went to the cards which read 60 – 54, 59 – 55 & 58 – 56 all for Matthews who improves to 7 – 0 with 5ko’s.

Queens NY featherweight Joselito Callado out boxed and out rumbled a determined, yet limited Jason Rorie of NC over 6 rounds. There were spots where Joselito would literally box circles around his opponent, but to the delight of the fans he opted to make a toe to toe fight of it for half of the fight and got the better in the two way exchanges. The only thing Callado lacks is pop but aside from that you can tell he is a very good, well rounded fighter. The cards read 59 – 55 x 3 for the Queens native. Before the fight, special guest ring announcer Mike Missinelli was booed mercilessly but when it was over the fans gave both fighters a standing ovation.

Jr. Lightweight Paul Fernandez got back on the winning track with a 4th round KO over TN’s Joseph Francisco, a fighter who all but gave up after an impressive 1st round. In the beginning Fernandez slowly moved forward, stalking in a Jason Vorhees manner and Francisco took full advantage using the ring, landing a few shots and getting out of there. As the fight wore on Francisco kept showboating but stopped throwing where as Fernandez began to land good combinations upstairs. Down the stretch, Fernandez dropped his opponent twice and it got to the point where referee Gary Rosato stopped it at 2:57 of the final round.

Welterweight Ronald Cruz stayed undefeated in a decent showing against a very in shape Shannon Hill of Cincinatti. Cruz loaded up a lot and did connect with some heavy bombs as Hill tried to circle and box for most of the fight. Cruz was most effective on the rare times he went to the body, something he should keep in his arsenal for the future. If he slipped in a few jabs, we could have a threat on our hands…. Take nothing away from Hill who did come to fight but in the end all the judges were in agreement that Cruz was the winner by scores of 40 – 36 x2 and 39 – 37.

In the opener, Taneal Goyco and Davit Davitashivili put on a wild, somewhat sloppy slugfest much to the delight of the crowd. Goyco landed some bombs early but Davit fought back hard in the middle. Davits face looked like an old piece of roast beef near the end with cuts and swelling on both eyes but he gave it all he had. Goyco did his thing as well and did more down the stretch to secure a unanimous decision win by scores of 39 – 36 x 3 as Davit was deducted a point for head butting in the 3rd.

Nakash blows out Carrol in 2, Shmouel wins return bout at The Blue!

At the Legendary Blue Horizon this Friday, boxing fans flocked to the Broad street for a solid 6 fight card which saw undefeated Israeli heavyweight Ran Nakash continue his knockout streak when he dismissed the light challenge of Ryan Carroll, dispatching the Delaware, Ohio native in less than 2 rounds. Nakash, a hand to hand combat instructor in the Israeli Army, used a body assault to pave the way to victory as Carroll’s flabby midsection wasn’t built to withstand the power punches downstairs. During this short fight, Carroll was dropped to his knees twice from shots to the bread basket. Midway through the 2nd, referee Steve Smoger saw enough and call a halt to the contest as it became apparent that Carroll was ready to gas out at any moment. Now at 17 – 0, Nakash should be on the doorstep of a good fight against someone capable of presenting a stiff challenge.

In the co-feature, Pittsburgh Jr. Welterweight Khristian Geraci had a rough night. Not only did he get bombarded with boo’s as he entered the ring due to wearing a Steelers jersey (a first class football organization btw), he was also bombarded with rights and lefts from his opponent, Elad Shmouel who wasted no time in his return to the ring after a 14 month layoff. Shmouel, who also serves in the Israeli Army, showed he was still explosive and in this one, didn’t waste much time finishing the job late in the 2nd round. Geraci tried but he was no match for the Kosher Pitbull who vows to get back on track and put together another winning streak.

In a 6 rounder, Julius Edmounds of Philly’s Frankford section pounded out a unanimous decision win over the previously undefeated Lindwood Herd of Atlantic City. The majority of the contest was spent in the wheel house as both men traded shots at close quarters. A lot of the rounds were tightly contested by Edmounds stepped it up at the end of every round to clearly take the advantage. I wouldn’t mind seeing an Edmounds – Victor Vasquez dustup sometime….

Southwest Philly’s Ardrick Butler earned his first win as a pro with a split decision over Anthony Abrams in a good Jr. Middleweight match. Butler showed flashes of the tools which made him an amateur champion back in 2005 and Abrams didn’t lay downin his retun from a 3 year layoff. Butler flashed a quick doble & triple jab and threw some nice combinations to the body. At times he was too active, other times he laid back and took pictures. Abrams knew one direction and that was forward which left little time for relaxation. In the end it went to the scorecards which read 39 – 37 for Abrams but that judge was over ruled by a 39 – 38 & 39 – 37 tally for Butler.

In the fight of the night, South Philly’s John Turner had New York’s Marcus Bianconi in trouble early but the Gleason’s Gym representative sucked it up and fought back to score a 2nd round TKO in a fight that was stopped on the advise of the ringside physician due to trouble with Turner’s leaky nose. There have been reports that Turner also broke his hand in 3 places in the 1st round though that hasn’t been verified. In this short slugfest, both threw and landed some bombs, Turner got caught late, let’s see a rematch!

In the opener, Ronald Cruz scored a 3rd round knockout over the pro debuting Adam Duncan. Cruz started out fast, scoring 2 knockdowns in the opening round but Duncan toughed it out and was competitive through 2. In the 3rd, Cruz landed a lot of heavy shots to cause the ref to step in and end it.

Ran Nakash headines @ The Blue Horizon 2-6-09

The boxing tandem of Vernoca L. Michael & Don Elbaum return to The Legendary Blue Horizon on February 6th with Israeli knockout artist Ran Nakash (16-0, 12ko’s) being promoted to headline attraction for the first time in his career, taking on Delaware, Ohio’s Ryan Carroll (7-1, 4ko’s) in a scheduled 8 rounder. It’s not quite the step up people want to see out of Nakash but it isn’t horrible either. Nakash, who serves as a hand to hand combat instructor in the Israeli Army, has become quite the crowd draw in recent months after spending the early portion of his stateside career fighting less than formidable opposition. That all changed in September when he stepped up, and knocked out South Philly slugger Larry Robinson :50 into the first round, opening the eyes on many who now say Nakash could evolve into a real threat in the cruiserweight division. Since that night Nakash returned to The Blue in December to knockout worn down journeyman Harvey Jolley in 7 rounds. For Carroll, this will mark the first time he will fight outside of his native Ohio where he fought some decent competition. The last time he really stepped it up, he was mowed down in 1 round by Aaron Williams. Since then, he returned a year later to squeak out a split decision over Mike Word. Let’s see how this one works out.

Former hot prospect Elad Shmouel (18-2, 9ko’s) is also said to be returning after a 14 month layoff to face the ever dangerous fighter TBA. Shmouel, who also serves in the Israeli Army, participated in the Philly 2007 fight of the year when we went toe to toe with Lenny DeVictoria in a non stop slug fest. Though it was a sensational scrap, his name lost a lot of luster when he went down for the count late in the 6th round. The road to a rematch starts here as Shmouel looks to have a tune up before taking on his stiffest challenge once again. Aside from the loss, Shmouel can pop with the best of them, let’s hope this rematch takes place sometime in ’09!

Former Amateur standout and current Jr. Middleweight Darren Fallen of Shulers Gym is scheduled for 6 rounds of action against former NY Golden Gloves champion Jason Thompson. Fallen has returned to win his last 2, Thompson has lost his last 2.
Look for John Turner, former amateur champ Ardrick Butler, Julius Edmonds and more. For tickets call 215-763-0500 or watch it on www.gofightlive.tv

Steve Chambers, LaJuan Simon & Ran Nakash win, Blackwell gets KO’d @ The Blue Horizon

December 5, 2008 Leave a comment

Photo by Anthony Gargano / www.pixgargano.com & Write-up by Charles “The Hatchet” Brewer.

On Friday December 5, 2008 at The Legendary Blue Horizon in Philly, promoter Vernoca Michael and matchmaker Don Elbaum put together their annual boxing holiday show. Over the past two years, the December card at The Blue had its share of surprising upsets and tradition held up for a third straight year. It wasn’t in the main event though as Philly Jr. Welterweight “Showtime” Steve Chambers improves to 19 – 1 (5ko’s) with an 8 round unanimous decision win over Ghana’s Ben Ankrah. This was a good test for the young Chambers as Ankrah as taken on a list of top prospects in the 140 lb division, most recently losing to the world rated Mike Arnoutis on points.

In the co-feature, USBA Middleweight champion LaJuan Simon had no problem blowing away Jose Spearman, scoring an early knockout in what amounts to a warm up fight to bigger and better paydays.

In other action, Israeli hand to hand combat instructor Ran Nakash once again showed off his dangerous hands, this time knocking out opponent Harvey Jolley in the 7th.

In a stunner, well regarded featherweight Jules Blackwell was stopped by Darrell Martin in their scheduled 6 rounder.

Julias Edmunds won a unanimous decision over Mike Weaver.

Lenny DeVictoria was presented the 1st ever “Briscoe Award” for participating in the Philly 2007 Fight of the Year. He also fought on this night in a rematch against Ricardo Medina in a fight that ended up as a draw.

Chambers wins again, Nakash stops Robinson, Culmer squeaks past Wilson at The Blue!

September 24, 2008 Leave a comment

The last fight card of the 2008 summer in Philly was at the Legendary Blue Horizon on Sept 12th and they came through with an exciting card that featured many local fighters facing off against one another. In the main event, “Showtime” Steve Chambers got his first shot at the headliner against perennial B-sider Kevin Carmody, a fighter who has taken on a bevy of rising prospects in his short career. There was a Cruiserweight showdown between two familiar faces as Israel’s Ran Nakash made his 6th pro stop the famed Philly fight hall. He would get the first real test of his career as he signed on to face the big punching Larry Robinson of South Philly in what was scheduled for 8 rounds but everyone in the building knew it wouldn’t go anywhere near that long. The other co-feature was a battle between two fighters who have been on the opposite end of many controversial decision in their day. Gee Cullmer just can’t seem to get any credit in this town for his wins, while Jameel “Black Gold” Wilson has gone the distance with some of the best in very close, entertaining only to get shafted on the scorecards. Also slated for action were two regarded amateurs making their pro debut in “Dangerous” Darrell Jones & Derek Bivins who fought in separate bouts. New Yawker William Jeter also stopped by to take on Pete Guthy. Scroll down to find out how it went down.

Steve Chambers….vs….Kevin Carmody
Philly………………Philly
17-1-1, 5ko’s………..10-9, 1ko

This main event featured two of Philly’s youngest, yet most experienced Jr. Welterweights. “Showtime” Steve Chambers, the brother of former King of the Blue “Fast” Eddie Chambers was getting his first shot to fill the void his bro left a little over a year ago. Carmody is no stranger to promotionally pushed opposition. At 22 years old, he has traveled the country and at times had his arm raised in victory. The main question coming into this was not if either man could fight, but who would take the initiative to actually make a fight out of it? Carmody isn’t known for his aggressiveness and Chambers, until recently, had a tendency to not fight with much fire.

All questions about the pace of this fight were answered immediately as both men stood in the center of the ring exchanging good leather. Midway through the round, Carmody landed a straight right down the pike which put Chambers on the seat of his pants. Chambers did beat the 10 count as Carmody stayed relaxed and picked his shots.

Down but far from out, Chambers and Carmody continued to exchange with Carmody getting the better through 3 rounds. The tide turned in the 4th when Chambers opened a cut over Caromdy’s left eye. In the 5th a straight right hand from Chambers sent Carmody’s mouthpiece flying into press row. Round 6 was very close and Carmody threw combination on the inside while Chambers looked to land the hard overhand right to the head.

The action died out down the stretch with Chambers seemingly doing more than the tiring Carmody. The fight went to the scorecard which read 78 – 73, 77 – 75 & 77- 74 for Chambers who improves to 18 – 1 – 1, 5ko’s

Larry Robinson….vs….Ran Nakash
South Philly…………Israel

Don Elbaum finally decided to step up the competition for his fighter Ran Nakash and this one was expected to be a war. In the end it was a one sided bombing as a Ran Nakash short right hook ended matters :50 into the 1st round of this Cruiserweight battle. An impressive win to say the least. Welcome to the Philly top 10 list.

Gee Culmer….vs….Jameel Wilson
Philly…………..Philly

As stated in the opening segment, this was a battle between two fighters have been involved in many close fights over the past few years. Culmer seems to always get the nod while Wilson usually gets the shaft. The ending of this one is open for debate as well in what turned out to be a very good two way action battle between two Philly natives.

In the opening three rounds, Gee Culmer put on a boxing clinic, using the ring, working his jab, sneaking in his straight right and getting out of the way of incoming danger.

But I know Jameel Wilson, and the book on him is he will lull you to sleep and give you a false sense of confidence, then lay the hammer on you. The middle rounds were very close, very competitive as Wilson dramatically picked up the pace and in the process, changed Gee’s approach from that of a smart boxer to street brawler.

Round 6 and 7 were big for Wilson who had Gee on the ropes and consistently land a variety of punches. Gee absorbed the shots and fired back some of his own, willing to fight it out. The crowd erupted at the end of these rounds.

The 8th started with a solid toe to toe exchange. Midway through Gee went back to his early formula of boxing instead of brawling and did quite well. Wilson came alive as time was winding down which sparked off another two way exchange until the final bell sounded.

The crowd was buzzing and press row scoring was all over the place. When Ring Announcer Larry Tornambe grabbed the mic, he announced a majority decision in favor of Culmer by scores of 77 – 75, 78 – 74 with the third judge seeing it even at 76-76.

Derek Bivins….vs….Darrell Martin
Philly……………..Baltimore

Derek Bivins started off his pro career in style with a one sided unanimous pounding over the usually durable Darrell Martin. In the beginning it was competitive but after round two, you could make a case for round 3 & 4 being 10 – 8′s as Bivins continuously stalked and battered Martin around the ring.

It went to the cards with all three judges seeing it 40 – 36 in favor of Bivins who is now 1-0 as a pro,

Darrell Jones….vs….James Wynn
Philly……………..

Dangerous Darrell Jones says he plans on cracking the top 10 list by next year and he is off to a strong start with fiery 3rd round KO over James Wynn in his pro debut. Jones fired off some hard body punches followed by soem right hooks to the head. After 2 rounds Wynn wanted out. By round 3 a left – right combo gave him that option as he hit the deck only to get up long after the 10 count was given.

Winner “Dangerous” Darrell Jones who improves to 1-0, 1ko

William Jeter…vs….Pete Guthy
New York………….

Two unknowns came to the Blue and put on a pretty good fight while it lasted. The highlight came in the 3rd where Guthy threw a right handed bomb with everything he had behind it and landed squarely on Jeter’s chin. The problem was, Jeter didn;t budge, then returned the favor two folder with a right handed bomb of his own which did put Guthy down twice, the second of which he wouldn’t beat the 10 count for.

Winner: William Jeter TKO 3 – 2:52
