Harry Yorgey KO’s Hearns in the 9th on ShoBox

Harry Joe Yorgey stock is at an all time high right now after he dealt Detroit’s Ronald Hearns his first career loss (21-1, 17ko’s) in front of a live national audience this weekend on Shobox: The Next Generation. Yorgey, another former #1 on the Philly Keith local top 10 pound for pound list, is now firmly planted on the national map after he thoroughly outclassed the undefeated son of an all time legend. Yorgey scored three total knockdowns and hit canvas once before finishing the fight off in round 9 which left Hearns out for the full count. A very good showing for the pride of Bridgeport, PA who stays undefeated with a record of 22-0-1.. More info to come soon.

Harry Yorgey to fight Ronald Hearns on ShoBox March 28th!

February 18, 2009 Leave a comment

It’s been reported on ESPN.com that Bridgeport’s Harry Joe Yorgey (21-0-1, 9ko’s) will face Detroit’s Ronald Hearns (21-0, 17ko’s) as the opening fight on the March 28 edition of Shobox: The Next Generation in a battle of undefeated prospects / fringe contenders in search of a road to the big time. Yorgey, another former #1 on the Philly Keith local top 10 pound for pound list, moved on from the Philly circuit over a year ago and recently won two yoheim titles with a 12 round thumping on the previously undefeated Jason LeHoullier in Tennessee back in August. The fight was ruled a majority decision but the judges must have been intoxicated.

Moving forward, with the legal and managerial obligations which kept him from fighting out of the way, it looks like Team Yorgey and their new promoter Art Pellulo are wasting no time to make their run at the top. His opponent, Ronald Hearns, son of the old school icon Tommy the Hitman, is also a well regarded young fighter who has already had major exposure on the big networks. Both are a bit older than most at this stage of their career but all that means to me is that both will lay it all on the line in a fight that has potential to be a very good rumble. Yorgey is more of the boxer, Hearns is more of the puncher, and both want a crack at the world title soon.

It is a great piece of matchmaking here and the winner is in line for a shot at the winner of the IBF title fight between Cory Spinks – Deandre Latimore so be sure to tune in. In the main event, hot Light Heavyweight prospect Andre Dirrell will go in against an opponent TBA soon. Give him hell Harry!

Kendall Holt escapes Demetrius Hopkins with a split decision win

With only 5 days to prepare, Demetrius Hopkins came within a whisker of winning his first world title when he filled in for an ill Ricardo Torres to challenge Kendall Holt for his WBO portion of the Jr. Welterweight title.

The fight which was held at Bally’s in Atlantic City, NJ and televised on Showtime had a steady theme, Holt was the aggressor and Hopkins looked to counter and capitalize on mistakes.

Though the TV announcer made you think that Holt was the second coming, truth is was this fight lacked in entertainment as both men wanted to fight smart as they had little time to prepare for their foe. It ended up going the 12 round distance and Jude Julie Lederman had it 115 – 113 for Hopkins but was overruled by Judges Luis Rivera and Judge Allan Rubenstein with scores of 117 – 111 & 116 – 112 respectively in favor of Kendall Holt.

Demetrius Hopkins steps in to fight Kendall Holt for the WBO title

On Saturday December 13th, 2008 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Demetrius Hopkins (28-0, 11ko’s) will get his shot at the title when he faces off against WBO junior welterweight champion Kendall Holt (24-2, 13ko’s) in the main event of this months edition of ShoBox: The Next Generation. The fight comes on less than a week notice as original challenger Ricardo Torres was unable to complete the Holt – Torres trilogy because of an unspecified illness. Hopkins, who is ranked #10 by the WBO, was a man in the right place at the right time as he was already scheduled for action on the untelevised under card against the unheralded Germaine Sanders.

This will be a significant step up for Hopkins who hasn’t fought in over a year due to promotional issues. Now, a full fledged member of Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotional outfit, he is looking to make up for lost time. After Ricky Hatton, the 140 lb division is pretty murky and Hopkins now finds himself in prime position to do some house cleaning in an unsettled area. In his first title shot with a 6 figure payday, look for D-Hop to carry on the championship tradition of the family name. Holt on the other hand, is already saying the 0 is gonna go!

The TV co-feature will pit Jr. middleweights Yuri Foreman (26-0, 8ko’) against James Moore (16-1, 10 ko’s) , both of New York, in a 10 rounder. Fighting off camera will be local Flyweight Qu’ad Muhammed (3-0, 3ko’s) will face Joseph Rios (5-3, 3ko’s) of Texas in a 4 rounder.
