Tony Thornton Passes Away Sept 11, 2009

It is my sad duty to report that Tony Thornton aka “The Punching Postman” from Glassboro NJ passed away on Friday as a result of injuries from a motorcycle accident on August 30th. A local favorite during his 12 year career, Thornton was well respected by his peers in the sport. He is described by Charles “The Hatchet” Brewer as “a consistent, Philly type of fighter who brought a lot of pressure and was solid in every area”.
Thornton turned pro in 1983 and fought under the Peltz banner on a hand shake dea for his entire 45 fight career. He was guided by Joe Gramby, who is considered to be the No. 1 black manager in Philly history and trained by Lou Clendaniel, followed by Wesley Mouzon with whom he got even better. Read more…
