Gabriel Rosado decisions Jose Medina in Newark! photo by Luke Walter

Boxing returned to the home of the Devil – The Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on December 9th, 2010. While the event was focused on Polish ticket seller Tomasz Adamek who was competing in the main event, there were a few local Philly fighters doing their thing in the lead-up’s to the featured attraction.

The evening’s matchmaker J. Russell Peltz threw “King” Gabriel Rosado (15-5, 8ko’s) a bone – giving local Jr. Middleweight a tune up bout against Massachusetts based tough guy Jose Medina (12-9, 5ko’s) on the under card. Rosado came into this bout fresh off a razor thin 12 round majority decision loss to USBA champion Derek “Pooh”Ennis in a match that is sure to go down into the history books as the 2010 Philly Fight of the Year.

During this fight in Newark, the 154 lber from the Badlands section of North Philadelphia was effective over the 8 round duration, using his time wisely and fine tuning certain aspects of his game though it certainly looked at time that he could take Medina out.

Overall it was a good showing for Rosado who put together some crisp combinations throughout the evening, scoring a knockdown in round 3 and having a few other close calls before taking his foot off the gas a bit. He seemed to follow trainer Billie Briscoe’s orders for sequences code named “The Mickey”, “The Mayweather” and something that sounded like “The Danny Bonaducci”. Medina was game and did take some big shots throughout the fight.

Word around the ring is that Rosado has an open date in Atlantic City early next year with offers on the table to Harry Yorgey and Jamaal “Da Truth” Davis. Many believe that Davis is the leading choice to take the fight. More to come soon…

Hard hitting North Philly Heavyweight Bryant “Bye-Bye” Jennings (5-0, 3ko’s) blasted out his opponent in round 2 of a scheduled 4 rounder. Smith didn’t have a prayer in this one.

There were some good fights in front of a gate that is estimated to be  around 3,500. Patrick Majewski scored a big time 8th round KO to cap off a two way war. Sadam Ali was given a nice test by Manuel Guzman. Tarvis Simms handled Willis Lockett like no one else has.

In the evenings main event, Polish Heavyweight Tomasz Adamek stopped Vinny Maddalone in the 5th round. Maddalone was throwing some heavy-handed meatballs but Adamek’s hand speed was too much to handle.

Rosado, McCants & Jennings to fight in Newark December 9, 2010

Adding to an already packed night of boxing at the Prudential Center in Newark NJ on Dec 9th, 2010 – matchmaker J. Russell Peltz announced that he has finalized an agreement with South Philly’s Philip “The Mongoose” McCants (8-1-1, 3ko’s) to take on the undefeated Raymond Biggs (9-0, 6ko’s) of Jersey City for a 6 round Jr. Middleweight bout. The Mongoose should be in good shape as he was preparing for undefeated James Stevenson until the DC fighter pulled out last minute for unexplained reasons. Biggs is a good prospect – but an untested one – and we should find out what he is all about after this one. Rust may be a factor as McCants hasn’t had a sanctioned fight in over 15 months. Word around the circles is that he has been training hard for months and should be ready to go.

Also on the card, “King” Gabriel Rosado (14-5, 8ko’s) returns to the ring for a scrap against (the other) Jose Media (12-8, 5ko’s) – a noted tough guy from Mexico who usually goes some rounds. Rosado recently lost a razor thin decision against USBA champion Derek Ennis in the fight everyone is calling the Philadelphia fight of the Year for 2010. Not getting the win was a big disappointment for Rosado and team but after this rust shaker he should be ready to again take on a good name in the 154 lb division. “King” Gabriel is training by Billie Briscoe as the Rivera Rec (aka The Oven) on 5th & Alleghany.

Also on the card is hard hitting North Philly Heavyweight Bryant “Bye-Bye” Jennings (4-0, 2ko’s). The former Ben Franklin High Defensive End has been cleaning people’s clocks in his short time as a pro – scoring some of the best KO’s in a local ring in 2010. This will mark his first bout off of Philadelphia soil. Jennings is still a work in progress as he just recently took up boxing – but after an amateur career that spanned less than 15 fights, many were convinced he has what it takes to make a successful run in a shallow heavyweight division. Jennings trains at the ABC Rec in North Philly and is trained by Fred Jenkins. The opponent on this evening is Randy Smith of Courtland, NY who is making his pro debut. Read more…

On February 27th 2010 , Peltz Boxing brought another strong, evenly matched card to Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City, this time with Top Rank boxing in the fold to take part in the new boxing series on Fox Sports Net. The goal of the night was to get rising welterweight Mike Jones (20-0, 16ko’s) some much deserved TV time as he continues his quest to rate amongst the best on the world in his division. His opponent was Henry Bruseles (28-4-1, 15ko’s) , a better than advertised journeyman riding a 7 fight winning streak.

The NABA titlist got the job done to the tune of a unanimous decision victory in front of a sold out crowd, most of whom came to see MJ perform in the main event. While there is no argument that Jones deserved a W in this fight, he had a much tougher than expected time against the shifty veteran.  Bruseles was able to work his way inside undeterred for most of the contest and Jones never set out to impose his will on the smaller opponent, opting to box, circle and move around without much forward motion. Bruseles found his way unabated into Jones chest for most of the night which made things very tight in the first half of the match.

Jones was able to take control in round 5 and won every round from there on out as he landed the better power punches and did a better job of avoiding the game Bruseles attack. Like the old timers say – win this one, look good the next time out.

Call this fight one to grow on as it will undoubtedly serve as a learning experience for Jones.

Add Saul Roman (32-6, 27ko’s) to the list of accomplished veterans that “King” Gabriel Rosado (14-4, 8ko’s) has beaten as the 24 year old Philadelphian was awarded a narrow split decision  following a 10 round blood bath which saw momentum swing back and forth throughout the contest.
Roman can be credited as the aggressor but Rosado’s precise counter punching and timely power shots were keys to victory.  There was nothing fancy in this fight, just a good old fashioned rumble between two tough fighters. Roman built a lead early – Rosado stormed back in the middle rounds and it was give and take down the stretch. Roman fought through a bad cut over the right eye while Rosado’s left eye had a slow leak.
The co-feature was the fight of the night with many in press row having scoring scattered across the board. Scores read 97 – 93 for Roman but were over ruled by two tallied of 96 – 94 for Rosado who continues to show he is one of the best Philly has to offer despite what his record may say.

On the undercard…

Jersey boys Troy Maxwell (2-0, 1ko) and Todd Erickson (0-3-1) waged four rounds of absolute mayhem in this unexpectedly entertaining action packed rumble. Erickson built an early lead using his size and speed to connect but Maxwell kept up the pressure and eventually broke the seal in round three. Both men traded and landed many hard punches. Maxwell’s ear was a mess, Erickson wasn’t very stead at certain points, both sucked it up and fought to win until the very end. The score cards read 39 – 37 x 3 for Maxwell. Erickson also deserves a nod for a job well done.

Ariel Espinal and Tony Pietrantonio waged their own war in a bit of a sloppy yet very good 6 round back-and-forth rumble that Espinal won by 5th round TKO. Both fighters stood inside and traded hard, wining bombs. Momentum shifted throughout but Espinal’s late assault led the referee to stop the fight against a dazed Pietrantonio’s protest.Ossie Duran and Jamaal Davis went toe to toe for 4 hard rounds.  It was give and take but it was the accomplished veteran Duran who was giving that much more in this shortened fight.  Davis stayed game, took the best Duran had to offer and stood his ground. It went to the cards which read 40 – 36 across the board for Duran.

We may have seen the final chapter in the career of ex champion Kendall Holt as he was surprisingly and soundly defeated by the anonymous Kaizer Mabuza via 6th round TKO. Holt had a good first round but Mabuza applied non stop pressure and eventually wore down the big name from Paterson. Holt’s corner stopped the fight in between rounds 6 and 7.

Glen Tapia came out of the gate like a pit bull scoring an early 1st round stoppage against Ty Miles.

Mike Jones , Gabriel Rosado & Jamaal Davis Fight In Atlantic city February 27

Talk about if here on the forum

On February 27th 2010, Peltz Boxing returns to Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City for a seven fight card with at least two of these bouts being televised live on the new Fox Sports Boxing Show. In the main event we have Mike Jones (19-0, 16ko’s) defending his NABA Welterweight title against veteran Henry Bruseles (28-3-1, 15ko’s) of Puerto Rico in the 10 round main event. This will mark Jones third consecutive start at the casino, a place where he hasn’t lost a second of either of the fights he was in. This fight looks to be no different as even Jones team concedes that “Bruseles is a good all around fighter but Mike does everything he can do better, we should have no problem”. The 29 year old Bruseles comes in on a 7 fight winning streak with his last loss coming in 2005 against Floyd Mayweather. Jones will need an impressive performance to captivate the imagination a national audience that has eluded him to date and also to recapture a local buzz that seems to be fading a bit. One vicious KO could solve all that in an instant. Either way – a victory will surly improve his already impressive world rankings which currently stand at Jones is # 7 in the WBA, # 11 by the IBF. # 16 by the WBC. Along with being promoted by Peltz Boxing, Jones team is considered amongst the best in Philly as he is managed by Doc Nowicki and Jim Williams and trained by Vaughn Jackson.

In the co-feature Gabriel Rosado (13-4, 8ko’s) again finds himself matched tough when he takes on proven veteran Saul Roman (32-5, 27 ko’s) of Tijuana in a 10 round co-feature.Rosado is coming one of his best performances as a pro when he stopped Latif Mundy in this same building last November. Roman, a 10 year pro at 29 years old, has fought some of the best with mixed results. The two men share a common opponent in Kassem Ouma – both ironically won by split decision. There is only one way we will find out who is the better fighter and I would think the winner should be in line for at least one of the Spanish titles floating around the business. Good matchmaking and potentially a good fight.

Jamaal “Da Truth” Davis (11-5, 6ko’s) will take on the rough Ossie Duran (23-8-2, 9ko’s) in an 6 rounder. Davis is another guy who hasn’t had much duck meat lately and the durable Duran will surely test his conditioning and stamina. Duran has survived attacks from James Kirkland, David Lopez and recently took Fernando Guerrero to the limit in a losing effort. Davis can pop – so it will be interesting to see how his shot holds up against guy who has been near the top and given a game effort. The winner of this one should should be in prime position to take on a name fighter for a nice paycheck in the near future.

Dennis Hasson is listed for this card though it is unconfirmed and no opponent has been named at press time.

Kendall Holt of Paterson, NJ take on Kaizer Mabuza of Johannesburg, South Africa in a 12 round IBF junior welterweight title eliminator; Glen Tapia, Passaic, NJ, vs. Tyrone Miles, Camden, NJ, 4, junior middleweights; Troy Maxwell, Galloway Township, NJ, vs. Todd Eriksson, Dover, NJ, 4, super middleweights. Expect to see the shoehorn at the entrance as all tickets are said to be sold out! Check eBay if you are desperate….

Mike Jones sends Pinzon packing & Rosado stops Mundy @ Bally’s!

November 10, 2009 Leave a comment

The date is November 10, 2009 and the city is gridlocked. The Phillies bats were stymied by three New York hurlers, in effect denied their shot at becoming back-to-back MLB world champions. Also this week, a piece of Philly boxing history was lost as The Spectrum closed it’s doors for good this week after being sent off to memory lane by a four night rock fest courtesy of Pearl Jam. To top it all off, SEPTA is on strike as Local 234 president Willie Brown had the audacity to order the men and women of The Transport Workers Union off the job and to the picket lines in hopes of a raise in these hard economic times, leaving many people standed in their tracks making routine travels to work and school a nightmare.

As the week finally ended, I was headed to Atlantic City to catch the fights. On this card, Mike Jones makes another statement that he is a young welterweight to be reckoned with as he retains his NABA Welterweight title via 5th round KO over Raul Pinzon in Atlantic City NJ. The started off a bit slow and methodically but did a 180 early in round 5 as Jones began to let his hands go, hurting Pinzon with head shots before ending matters with a single vicious body shot that left Pinzon on the canvas in agony, making no attempt to beat the 10 count. Sources close to the NJ commission say Pinzon suffered broken ribs.

With the win, Jones keeps his title and world ratings as well as furthering a statement that the journeyman type is no match for him. Network execs should take notice because MJ would make an excellent choice of opponent for any young 147 lber in the world….

In the co main event, Gabriel Rosado bounces back with a 7th round TKO win over Latif Mundy during a battle of Philly Jr. Middleweights.

Best fight of the night, good exchanges and the rounds see-sawed until a big surge from Rosado hurt Mundy midway through the 7th, after a continued assault, the referee was left with no option but to call a halt to the battle.

In other action…

Mike “No Joke” Stewart recovered from a 3rd round knockdown to win a unanimous decision over Louis Lejia by scores of 57 – 56 across the board.
Josh Mercado won a hard fought unanimous decision
Ronald Cruz won a decision over Ashante Henderson in a fight closer than the final scores indicated.

Angulo KO’s Rosado in 2 on ESPN

August 9, 2009 Leave a comment
“King” Gabriel Rosado looked very sharp for the first 4.5 minutes of the bout but one punch changed it all as Alfredo Angulo landed a stunning right midway through the 2nd round which changed the course of the fight. Rosado would go down three times before the referee stopped it as amazingly Rosado seemed able to continue.
Tough loss but expect to see Rosado back in the mix soon taking on another contender or prospect in the 154 lb division.

Watch “Gabe & Billy’s War”, by Alex Berger

Check out this short documentary titled “Gabe & Billy’s War” created by University of Penn student Alex Berger. Alex goes in depth, following Philly Jr. Middleweight Gabriel Rosado & Trainer Billy Briscoe as they prepare for an upcoming fight. An interesting behind the scenes look at the fight process and also an intro to the relationship between trainer & fighter.

Gabriel Rosado to fight Alfredo Angulo on ESPN August 7th!

Talk about it on the forum at http://phillykeith.com/fightforum/index.php?topic=857.msg6466#new

North Philly Jr. Middleweight “King” Gabriel Rosado (12-3, 7ko’s) is at it again, this time taking on the highly regarded Alfredo “Perro” Angulo (15-1, 15ko’s) of Mexico in the ESPN main event August 7th in Primm, NV.

Rosado is gaining recognition around town as the ultimate Philly fighter. Spending his time taking on names that could make one’s career end, he has done very good work in the role of “travelling opponent” beating James Moore in Brooklyn and taking a decision over former world titlist Kassim Ouma on Ouma’s people’s card in Newark, NJ. He also gave rising star Fernando Guerrero a hard time in a losing effort. While others refuse to go into other hometowns against highly regarded fighters, Rosado has put himself on the map by doing it. But now he truly faces his toughest task to date.

Alfredo Angulo was thought to be on the fast track to a title only a month ago. He stream rolled his way through opponents after opponent with non-stop power punches with immense intensity. Some say he was one-dimensional. but that one dimension was fierce. Things came into question in May after Angulo slipped up and took his first loss against former champ Kermit Cintron. There was lots of speculation on what happened. Was Angulo sick? He sure didn’t bring the same fire we became accustomed to. Was he flat out exposed? He never faced someone who would use the ring and fight smart. Cintron is an experienced vet who fights at a high level. There were also rumors of Angulo looking to pull out of the fight days before hand but was not allowed because it would collapse the entire card.

So now, the situation is this. In one corner you have Rosado, the fearless Philadelphia fresh off a win over a former world champion. Though some feel Ouma is shot, the win definitely must be recognized. A win over a fighter considered to be a top prospect in this division would likely ascend Rosado into someone’s world rankings. He has done it before, everyone is interested to see if he can do it again. It is a fight this team has wanted, now they got it on national TV.

Angulo on the other hand will definitely be looking for blood out of Rosado on national TV. If Angulo is on-point, he is very dangerous. If they guy who fought Cintron showed up, he is in trouble. A loss would be disastrous for Angulo’s career and I am sure Team Rosado would be more than happy to throw the dirt over the grave.

Tune into ESPN2 on August 7, 2009 for the Friday Night Fights Main Event!

April 2009 Philly Top 10 Pound for Pound Lists!

It has been a while since I put together a Philly top 10 list and in that time it is still pretty obvious who is #1 in the town, that would be B-Hop. But in the past year there has been a lot of activity amongst the rank and file who made moves to get to the top. Some succeeded, some failed, some have rebounded and others are on their way.

This time around I give you two lists. First is a national Philly top 10 pound for pound which gives my ranking to those from this area who are either champions, within title contention or TV fighters. These guys are all over the world and are known industry names.

The next list is themed “21 & Under” ranking the Philly pros with 21 pro fights or less. These fights can take place anywhere in the world. This list tracks the activity of the young pros who seem to be on their way to making big moves in the boxing circuit within the next few years. These rankings are based on pro performance and potential, not solely on amateur career.

This was done as a replacement for the local top 10 list that ranked boxers competing within city limits. There was just not enough activity to compile one. Take a look and feel free to send any feedback to me via email.

Hank Lundy KO’s Cintron in 5, Rosado wins by split decision over Ouma in Newark!

April 28, 2009 Leave a comment

Talk about it on the forum http://phillykeith.com/fightforum/index.php?topic=735.0

South Philly’s “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy talks a big game and early reports from Newark as saying he backed his words up in a big way with a one sided 5 round knockout win over the previously undefeated Jason Cintron of Reading, PA. More details to come soon but it has to be recognized that Lundy once again fearless goes into unknown territory against an undefeated opponent and leave with his 0 still in tact. It won’t be long before Hammer Time returns to TV soon taking on the name fighters in the 135 – 140 lb division.

In the co-feature North Philly’s “King” Gabriel Rosado is back on the map by winning a split decision over former Jr. Middleweight champion Kassim Ouma in their 10 rounder. Word out of Newark is that the early going was closely contested but Rosado was clearly in control in the final rounds in an action match up that went the 10 round distance. The first scorecard read 96-94 Ouma but were over ridden by scores of 96 – 94 & 97 – 93 in favor of Rosado who once again grabs the bull by the horns and reestablishes himself as a threat in the 154 lb division. Expect to see Rosado receive another opportunity to fight under the big lights of a major network soon.
