On Saturday April 3 – Germantown’s Bernard Hopkins gets his long awaited chance to avenge an early career loss to Roy Jones Jr. This fight will headline an HBO PPV card that is going to take place at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The odds makers say you need to drop $500 on B-Hop to win $325. I place the odds to more around 4 – 1 for The Executioner. Hopkins is coming off a hard fought unanimous decision win in his hometown while Jones is coming off a surprising 1st round TKO loss – a fight that left many to conclude that he is finished as a prize fighter.

While father time may have taken some luster away from this bout – let’s not forget the history here. We have two sure shot, first ballot Hall of Famers here. Hopkins is one of the all time great Middleweights – setting the bar as he holds the record for most consecutive 160 lb title defenses with 20. He has defied the odds time and time again and in the process compiling a resume that holds wins over notables such as Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Kelly Pavlik, Winky Wright, Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson and more.

Jones is widely considered the fighter of the 1990’s. In his prime – his blend of speed, power and instinct made him a once in a lifetime talent. He has won titles from middleweight all the way up to heavyweight and dominated every time out. Hopefully he still has something left in the tank for this fight. He ironically won his first world title in a decision win over Hopkins in 1993.

Since that loss- B-Hop has been clamoring for a rematch – a request that Jones often denied. Back then Jones was in the drivers seat and able to dictate the terms and conditions of the fight, many of which Hopkins claimed to be a raw deal on the purse. Times have changed and Roy wants to go out on top. Hopkins is considered to still be around the top of his game and a win over him would be a nice cherry on top of a great career. For B-Hop, it is payback time. Time to make Roy eat all of those words he spit out over the years. The insiders say this fight is 10 years too late but the workin’ folk on the SEPTA buses say they want Bernard to knock his ass out!
